English

Both English Lit and English Lang

Combine to counter modern slang

They’ve worked together since the days

Some learned chap made up the phrase.

And though we use them separately

They act in perfect harmony

Which leaves most students in no doubt

Whose language has the greatest clout.

One look around the competition

Proves the power of our position

French is silky smooth and sweet

But clearly struggles to compete.

The Spanish word though widely spoken

Finds its’ influence is broken

Others are in sharp decline

Which suits we English speakers fine.

The mesmerising chat in Rome

Falls flat compared with that at home

For English Lang and English Lit

Still make the most terrific fit.

But while the West is in its debt

From yonder comes an earnest threat

For with the Chinese on the rise

Will this at last spell its demise?
